How to Enjoy a Mystic, Connecticut Christmas
Santa Arrives by Tugboat and the Lighted Boat Parade
If there’s one day that marks the beginning of Christmas in downtown Mystic, it’s the Saturday after Thanksgiving. In 2026, that’s November 28.
Santa arrives at Mystic River Park at 2 p.m. aboard the John Paul, a Cross Sound Ferry tugboat. Later that evening, the Christmas tree at Mystic River Park is lit at 6 p.m., followed by the Mystic Christmas Boat Parade at about 6:15. Decorated boats travel along the Mystic River while people watch from the park and other spots along the waterfront.
Downtown gets busy, especially as evening approaches. If you’re staying at The Whaler’s Inn, you don’t have to worry about finding a downtown parking space before the parade. Mystic River Park and the riverfront are a short walk from the hotel.
Movie fans may recognize the tradition, too. The parade appears in Hallmark’s Mystic Christmas, which was filmed around town.
Lantern Lights at Mystic Seaport Museum
Mystic Seaport Christmas events have changed over the years, and the museum’s main nighttime event for 2026 is Lantern Lights: A Mystic Holiday. It runs December 3-6, 10-13, and 17-23, from 2:00 to 8:30 p.m. Entry is timed, with arrival windows beginning at 2 p.m. and the final entry at 7 p.m.
The event takes over part of the museum grounds with period performances, caroling, carriage rides, and holiday activities. Stay into the evening for what the museum calls Magic Hour, when thousands of lights come on around the historic village and waterfront.
Tickets are timed, so this is one event we wouldn’t leave until the last minute if you have a particular night in mind. Holiday Lights Spectacular at Olde Mistick Village
Olde Mistick Village doesn’t hold back on Christmas lights. Its Holiday Lights Spectacular uses more than 500,000 of them throughout the shops, trees, and walkways, and the display is free to visit.
For 2026, the lights run from November 20 through January 31, 2027. The village also has several other events scheduled for December, including a Holiday Carnival on December 5 and the 43rd annual Festival of Lights on December 11.
The Festival of Lights is worth noting if your trip falls on that Friday. Thousands of luminarias line the village that evening, giving you a different view of a place already heavily decorated for Christmas.

The Stonington Lobster Trap Tree
The Stonington Lobster Trap Tree is about 10 minutes from downtown Mystic and is one of the more unusual Christmas displays you’ll find along the Connecticut coast.
Instead of evergreen branches, the structure is made from roughly 460 lobster traps and decorated with hundreds of hand-painted buoys. Professional artists and local children paint many of them, and the finished tree is large enough to walk inside. The project began in 2021 to celebrate Stonington’s fishing community and maritime history.
The 2026 lighting is scheduled for Saturday, November 21 at 4:30 p.m. at the Stonington Town Dock. Admission is free.

Things to Do in Downtown Mystic in December
You don’t need an event ticket to enjoy Christmas in Mystic, CT. Downtown is compact enough that you can spend a few hours walking between shops, restaurants, and the river without getting back in the car. If you’re looking for things to do in Mystic, CT in December, a few of our favorites are:
- Shop downtown. Main Street and the surrounding blocks are lined with independent shops, bookstores, and galleries, many within a few minutes’ walk of The Whaler’s Inn. Our downtown Mystic guide is a good place to start.
- Stop at Sift Bake Shop. Pastry chef and owner Adam Young won Food Network’s Best Baker in America, and Sift is just down Water Street from the hotel.
- Walk along the Mystic River after dark. It’s one of the simplest things to do during a December stay. Walk down to Mystic River Park, cross the Bascule Bridge, and see downtown after the shops and streets have been decorated for Christmas.
- See the Community Carol Sing at Mystic Seaport Museum. This longstanding Mystic tradition is generally held in December. Check the museum’s current calendar for the 2026 date before planning your trip.
- Have dinner at The Shipwright’s Daughter. You don’t have to leave The Whaler’s Inn for one of Mystic’s best-known restaurants. Chef David Standridge won the 2024 James Beard Award for Best Chef: Northeast, and the menu changes with the season.

There’s a good reason people make the comparison. Hallmark’s Mystic Christmas premiered in 2023 and was actually filmed in Mystic. The movie used recognizable locations including Mystic Aquarium, Olde Mistick Village, and Mystic Seaport Museum, and even incorporated Mystic’s real Lighted Boat Parade.
