Gluten-Free Dining Guide to Downtown Mystic

Gluten-free dining in downtown Mystic goes well beyond a side salad. Start the morning with gluten-free macarons from Sift Bake Shop, then order a burger on a gluten-free bun at Engine Room for lunch. For dinner, Red 36 and The Shipwright’s Daughter both offer gluten-free seafood.

Many of these spots are within walking distance of The Whaler’s Inn, so you can plan a full day of meals without moving the car. Below are our favorites for breakfast, lunch, and dinner, plus a few tips for planning a gluten-free stay.

Menus change often in Mystic, and few kitchens here are fully gluten-free. Always confirm current gluten-free options with the restaurant before you go, and let your server know about any allergies or cross-contamination concerns before you order.

The Best Coffee Shops in Mystic, CT

Most of the best coffee in Mystic, CT, is within a few minutes’ walk of the Bascule Bridge. On the east side of the bridge, you’ll find espresso at our own restaurant and popovers on East Main Street. Cross over to Water Street for pastries and espresso at Sift Bake Shop, or walk to the train station for a cup at Mystic Depot Roasters. If you have a car, Deviant Donuts in Olde Mistick Village is worth the short drive. Whether you want a quick cup before a morning at Mystic Seaport Museum or a slow latte with a pastry, here are the coffee shops in Mystic we recommend, starting with the one in our own building.

Coffee at The Whaler’s Inn

The Shipwright’s Daughter

You can start your day with coffee from our own building. The Shipwright’s Daughter, our on-site restaurant on the ground floor of the Main Inn, serves breakfast à la carte. Its baristas make a full espresso menu, from a perfectly balanced espresso to the house turmeric-infused latte. It’s an easy place to linger over a second cup before you head out for the day.

The breakfast menu changes with the seasons and features New England ingredients, with eggs cooked to order, house-made pastries, and savory plates. Guests in select Stanton House rooms can also have breakfast brought to their suite for a slower start to the morning. After breakfast, you’re steps from the Bascule Bridge and the shops and galleries of downtown Mystic.

The Lobby

Coffee doesn’t stop at breakfast. Complimentary coffee is available in our lobby throughout the day, so you can fill a cup before a walk across the bridge or after an afternoon of exploring. Freshly baked cookies come out every afternoon, and our 24-hour front desk team is always happy to point you toward the next coffee stop on this list. Book your stay today!
