Anthony J’s Bistro has been a Mystic staple for over 30 years.  A visit to “AJ’s”, as the locals call it, provides the diner with a warm and welcoming atmosphere with a true Italian corner restaurant vibe. The friendly staff and cozy ambiance are just a precursor to the amazing decadent meals. The perfect spot for an intimate dinner, AJ’s is spotted with built-in tables for two surrounding a small fireplace casting a romantic glow on the warm wood interior.

Warming Up at Happy Hour

Our recent visit was for a quick Happy Hour stop on a cold winter’s day.  Escaping the near arctic temperatures, we warmed up with a decadent coffee drink garnished with a sugar rim and wafer cookie before enjoying bites from their “Prime Time” menu.  My absolute favorite appetizer and must order at every visit are the meatballs.  The perfect texture, the perfect amount of sauce, and the perfect size for sharing, this dish is all that is right with Italian dining.

Because there were four of us at this visit, we also added the Soupy and Roasted Garlic Pizza. For those of you who aren’t familiar with the Italian style sausage, Soupy is a cured meat that is especially popular in this part of New England.  It does have a bit of spice to it, so it is not for the faint of heart, but the pairing of whole garlic cloves and ooey gooey cheese make the pizza a crowd-pleaser. This paired beautifully with a glass of wine on this visit although my go-to drink at Anthony J’s is usually an Espresso Martini. With fresh Espresso and a martini glass worthy of a two-hand hold, it is the perfect pick me up that you won’t want to put down.
